The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Emily M.Danfort)
Available: Book and Audiobook
Me (spoilers alert):
Cameron, a character to fall for ...
Cameron Post who lives in a small religious town start noticing liking girls very early when she kiss her best friend and they truly like it. She wonders a lot... Question everything around.
Next thing her parents suddenly die in a car accident and also her best friend is no longer around for her. Cameron struggle with the lost, thinks that her parents died because she kissed a girl, because of her sin. Her religious aunt and grandma are now her family and years start to pass by. Cameron becames older but continuously finds herself having feelings for girls...until Coley Taylor one of her new best "straight" friend and mayor crush ends having a thing with her. After a few ups and downs...Coley seems to enjoy this too until one day they are almost caught. Sadly Coley ends betraying and accusing Cam of their "sins". Then her aunt decides to send her to a conversion camp therapy, basically a hell of experience (yeah they still exists and legally, this is the hole issue we have to face here).
Cam is truly a strong interest sweet funny character. She share her journey with you intimately, her parents death, her feelings about girls and her hard time in the camp and the struggle with her sexuality/religion, as Cameron's growth as a deep teenager.
I listened this book on audible and was great.
You will be able to see the movie soon so read or listen this book first so you can compare with the movie.
Another beautiful book with a similar situation that I recommend is "her name in the sky".
Wikipedia: this book tells the story of Cameron Post, a 12-year-old Montana girl whose parents die in a car crash just as she is discovering her own homosexuality. Her conservative Aunt Ruth and paternal grandmother come to live with her in Miles City, Montana. She develops a relationship with her friend, Coley Taylor, and is eventually outed. Cameron is then sent to God's Promise, a camp that practices "conversion therapy" and promises to teach her "appropriate gender roles". The remainder of the book explores Cameron's experience at the camp, friends she makes there and her defiance to be "re-educated".
